The Scapegoat

After walking for a while they reached the Calypso motel. This motel was also very familiar to Harut in that it bore many memories, both pleasant and unpleasant. This was a very nice motel with a swimming pool, laundromat; the rooms had a kitchen, cable TV with free HBO, a living room and a bedroom with two double beds.
            The two drawbacks of the motel were that it was quite far from the work site and that the rent was a bit too high for Ani. She hesitated for a while, but Harut convinced her saying that otherwise they might not find anything else at all.
            "You don't have to live here forever, dear Ani, just a week or so before we find you anything better, and maybe we'll move out of Atlantic Scene and come to live here together. It is only temporary, so that you have at least a place to spend the nights."

            "But the rent is too expensive for me, eighty-eight dollars a week, I will have to give all my money."
"Won't there be left anything at all?"
"Well, just another hundred dollars, and that's it."
"Ok, that's just about what you need. Next Tuesday you'll get your first paycheck."
"But then, I won't have any money left to buy a bicycle. And I'll have to buy one, 'cause it's pretty far from downtown."
           "That's true, too, honey. Let's do this: let's ask the manager if he could suspend your first payment till a later date, till your first payday."
